Following the amazing May Weekend Bank Holiday Barnbuskers open air barn dance at the East Quay Cultural Centre in Watchet, West Somerset, Barnbuskers Duo are heading off this weekend to the Charletons Community Centre over in South Somerset for a fun barn dance to raise funds for Charleton Mackrell Church of England Primary School.
Organising the barn dance are the Friends of Charleton Mackrell Church of England School and tickets can be obtained from their Facebook page (see link above).
Barn dances are a wonderful way for people of all generations to get together and have a great time. The tunes that Barnbuskers Ceilidh Barn Dance Band play have been thrilling generations from toddlers to pensioners for hundreds of years. Country Dancing is unique because, if you can walk, skip or gallop, you can do the do-si-dos, right hand stars, circling to the left and right and other regularly featured figures in these dances. From beginners to experts, everyone can take part so it’s ideal for community get togethers. The secret recipe is the Country Dance Caller who walks the dancers through each dance before the music starts then keeps calling out the moves for as long as is needed. For the Charleton Mackrell School barn dance, the dance caller will be one of Barnbuskers favourite callers, Steve (photo below). Steve is a regular caller for Barnbuskers and we always enjoy his traditional dancing quips.

Highly experienced and very welcome newcomer to Barnbuskers Ceilidh Barn Dance Band, Ruth (photo below), will be playing her lively, energetic and spirited violin for the Barnbuskers Duo.

And Barnbuskers Band leader, Judy, will be playing her accordion to provide exciting chords and a pulsing bass line to keep the dancers wanting more. If you too would like Barnbuskers to provide the music and caller for a barn dance or ceilidh, whether fundraising, special birthday or otherwise, you can contact Judy on Barnbuskers contact page. We look forward to hearing from you.

So, if you are in South Somerset or live locally around Charleton Mackrell or any of the surrounding villages such as Charlton Adam, Keinton Mandeville, Kingsdon, Babcary or the towns of Somerton, Street and Glastonbury and you are looking for a fun barn dance, Charleton Mackrell School Barn Dance on Saturday 9th May 2026 is worth checking out. Tickets are available from Friends of Charleton Mackrell School as mentioned in their poster below. Important note: the barn dance is at the Charltons Community Centre not the school.
