What an amazing afternoon at East Quay, Watchet in West Somerset yesterday. There were activities for children everywhere and it was wonderful to see whole families country dancing in the sunshine to our Barnbuskers ceilidh barn dance music. Sometimes in our screen driven modern world we forget the power of one person talking to another and people being together socially. East Quay, Watchet, in West Somerset, yesterday, shone like a beacon of humanity that demonstrated what it means to be part of a caring and happy community. Children seated on the floor were staring with round eyes and rapt attention as a story teller took them to an imaginary magical place. Children danced around the maypole with smiles and laughter. There were lots of craft activities to see and experience, including willow bending and weaving. It was a treat to see the families join in the dancing and the masks of beings, created in a recent workshop, were marvellous.

The experienced dancers from Barnbuskers band leader’s Judy’s Ceilidh classes in Watchet and Minehead were there in force and enjoying the live music and the atmosphere. It was a great opportunity for Judy’s two country dancing groups to meet and have fun. With do-si-dos, right hand stars and galloping between the lines, it was easy to see why country music and dancing has been bringing people together and thrilling generations for hundreds of years. Although described as a class, Judy’s Country Dancing get togethers are more like a social gathering with music and laughter.
