There was lots of fun last night when a group of remote workers got together for a corporate retreat team away day event barn dance at Secret Valley in the Quantock Hills near Bridgwater in Somerset. Barnbuskers Ceilidh Band leader Judy called the dances, Ruth provided a fiery fiddle and Sarah kept a wonderfully regular guitar rhythm accompaniment. Judging from the laughter, everyone had a great time with spirited dancing throughout the evening.
There were do-si-dos, right hand stars, left hand stars, dancing around in a circle and lots of enthusiastic galloping between lines proving that barn dancing is a great way to bring a remote working team together at a corporate away day.
It’s just hard to be too serious when you are dancing through an arch created by two of the other dancers and the whole Barnbuskers Band emphasis is on an enjoyable get together where everyone can join in. In every case, the caller explains the dances before the music starts and then carries on calling the dance moves for as long as is needed after the music has started. The music is cheerful and toe tapping. The dances are simple and carefully explained so that everyone can join in whatever their ability or country dancing experience. Barn dance callers, like Barnbuskers Band leader Judy, are very experienced at expertly tailoring the country dances to those present. It’s a light hearted shared learning experience and any mistakes are part of the fun usually contributing to lots of laughter.
