As well as maypole dancing, of course, there will be lots more fun things to do:

1-3pm: Craft and family friendly activities

  • Make animals from willow
  • Find out how sheep’s wool is spun
  • See how trees are turned into bowls and spoons
  • Have your face painted as an animal or plant
  • Listen to stories about magical beings and nature (1.30pm and 2.30pm)
  • Make a mask of your favourite ‘being’

2pm: Maypole dancing

3pm: May Day blessing to celebrate the changing seasons

3.15pm: Live Country Dancing Music from Barnbuskers Ceilidh Barn Dance Band!

After the maypole dancing, round off the day country dancing with Barnbuskers Ceilidh Band!

There will be right-hand-stars, do-si-dos and lots of swinging your partners. Also lots of laughter and without any doubt quite a few whoops!

Caller Bridget (on the left above) will explain the dances with a walk through before the music starts and will continue calling the moves for as long as needed while the music plays. If you’ve never done country dancing before, no worries, you’ll have a great time! It’s suitable for all ages, beginner-friendly, and great fun!

Bring your own partner or find one on the dance floor assisted by the caller. Plus there will be dancers joining in from the local Watchet and Minehead Judy’s Weekly Ceilidh Classes who will be happy to help beginners. If you catch the bug for country dancing, new joiners at Judy’s classes are always welcome!

Food & Drink
Throughout the day, there will be a range of delicious seasonal food and drink from the East Quay Kitchen and bar.

Maypole Dancing is a Timeless English Tradition

Maypole dancing dates back centuries, with roots in ancient seasonal festivals that marked the arrival of summer. Villages across England would gather around a tall wooden pole adorned with ribbons, flowers, and greenery—symbols of fertility, renewal, and community spirit. Dancers, often dressed in traditional attire, would weave intricate patterns around the pole, creating a beautiful and symbolic tapestry of movement.
