St Mary’s Church Centre, Nether Stowey in Somerset proved ideal venue for a Burns Night weekend double birthday party with music and caller from Barnbuskers Ceilidh Barn Dance Band

St Marys Church Centre Nether Stowey in Somerset double birthday ceilidh

Barnbuskers loves providing the music and caller for a good birthday party ceilidh or barn dance. There is something very special about families getting together and having a great time. Without doubt, ceilidhs and barn dances are an ideal way of bringing the generations together. Last night’s ceilidh at St Mary’s Church Centre was a perfect example with a wonderful mix of people from the very youngest to those into retirement age enjoying the evening together. That it was a double birthday party being shared by mother and daughter made it even more special.

Barnbuskers also loves a great hall to play our music. St Mary’s Church Centre, Nether Stowey at the foot of the Quantock Hills, Somerset is a very modern, well presented hall and stood up to our greatest expectations. With around 80 people present, there was plenty of room for the dining tables for the evening meal and then, after some of the tables had been put away, lots of room for the dancing. And what energetic dancing there was. Under the experienced guidance of Bridget, one of Barnbuskers favourite ceilidh dance callers the dancers fairly flew across the floor with jigs, do-si-dos, right hand turns, left hand stars, some tremendous galloping between the lines and lots more. We in the band know when people are having a good time because of all the shouts of laughter. However, fortunately, our powerful amplifications systems had no problem enabling our music to be heard above the enjoyment.

With the birthday girls having connections with Scotland and Burns Night being the day after the party, Barnbuskers were well rigged out in their tartan adding to the atmosphere and Scottish dances were very much part of the night’s theme.

In the lead up to Burn’s Night, Scottish dancing had been very much the theme in band leader Judy’s Ceilidh Dance Classes locally in Watchet and Minehead. With the evening having a Scottish dancing theme, Judy (below) was very pleased to don the tartan!

As mentioned above, Barnbuskers Ceilidh Barn Dance Band loves playing the music and providing the dance caller for Ceilidhs. We already have lots of birthday party ceilidhs and barn dances booked in the new year of 2026 but we almost always have room for some more.

So if you are in the Somerset or Devon area and would like to hold a barn dance / ceilidh for your special birthday, please get in touch with Judy. We can provide lots of options for your ceilidh party ranging from caller with recorded music, two musicians with caller right up to the full band of four musicians with caller. Judy will be happy to advise. We like to think that we can make ceilidh dancing available to all budgets and you might be pleasantly surprised.
