There was recently a ‘Flash Mob’ ceilidh dance in Cornwall that was rather lovely. Judy, who is an active follower of Ceilidh Cornwall, spotted it on Facebook . So we are wondering. Wouldn’t it be fun if we could do something similar in West Somerset?
For those on Facebook, here’s the link to the Cornish ‘Flash Mob’ Ceilidh Dance!
If you are new to this wonderful community activity, and are perhaps not on Facebook, here’s an explanation. ‘Flash mobs’ have become popular internationally for lots of different activities and are an excellent way of demonstrating fun activities to the general public who might not be very aware of something they could enjoy.
The ‘Flash Mob’ might start with a single musician playing a tune. As the tune progresses, other musicians, apparently just passing, slowly join in. Soon there is a whole orchestra of musicians filling the area with glorious sound. ‘Flash Mobs’ have been done with lots of activities, including choirs, pop ensembles and dancers. The possibilities seem unlimited and they are a wonderful community experience.
For those not on Facebook and unable to see the video, the Cornish Ceilidh Flash Mob starts with two couples swinging as in the video below.
As the music continues, other dancers join in to build an ever increasing circle. There is stepping into the centre and clapping, promenading around the circle as couples and balancing to the left and right (step to the left, kick right, step to the right and kick left). All the usual (easy) country dance / ceilidh moves and steps. It’s magical.
If you are intrigued by the possibilities and would like to learn more about ceilidh dancing classes locally in West Somerset (and maybe even join in plans for a West Somerset ceilidh flash mob) then Judy would love to hear from you and tell you about her beginner ceilidh classes. There are currently classes in Watchet and Minehead but all local villages are welcome to join in with either or both of these classes.
So, here’s a shout out to all local West Somerset villages close to Watchet ie Williton, Roadwater, Washford, Luxborough, St Audries, Sampford Brett, Stogumber, Bicknoller, Nether Stowey,
Villages close to Minehead might prefer the Minehead class for convenience ie Dunster, Blue Anchor, Selworthy, Allerford, Porlock, Luccombe, Old Cleeve, Culbone, Carhampton, Timberscombe, Bossington, Wootton Courtenay and other Exmoor villages
(By the way, there has also been some discussion of having a Judy’s Ceilidh Dance Exercise Class at the Lysaght Hall in Old Cleeve.)
Judy’s Ceilidh Dance Exercise classes are a great way to meet people, get active, and enjoy something a little different midweek. Whether you are working age or a pensioner, country / ceilidh dancing is an ideal and fun way to get just the amount of exercise that is right for you.
The best way to find out if the classes suit you is to come along. You will be made welcome. To give Judy an idea of numbers, it would be helpful if you could contact her via the WhatsApp button below. Alternatively, visit Judy’s Ceilidh Exercise Classes contact page.
