Time to do-si-do! Barnbuskers Ceilidh Dance Band have been booked to host a barn dance at the band stand in Vivary Park, Taunton, Somerset UK on Sunday 18th May 2025 from 3pm to 5pm where we will be playing toe-tapping English country dance music entertainment for an exciting Summer ceilidh barn dance in the park.

Everyone is welcome and there will be an English country dance caller to explain the dances through before and during each dance so no previous experience is needed. However, we thought it might be nice to explain some of the moves that make up English Country dances that have been thrilling people of all ages for hundreds of years and are still popular indoors or outdoors at village halls, weddings, anniversaries and special birthday celebrations because all the family can join in and they are lots of fun.
So here we go! You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to do the do-si-do which is a staple move in a huge number of English country dances!
Quite simply!
Partners face each other about 2 metres apart and take 4 steps forward, passing by their right shoulders.
Each partner then steps right without turning around
And both reverse back 4 steps, passing left shoulders to finish in original places
That’s it! All done to a time space of 8 beats in the music!
Of course, in a complete dance, there will be other moves to make it more interesting, and these will be explained by the caller, but now you know what to do when the dance caller shouts out do-si-do!
Meanwhile, here’s some music we played at an indoor birthday party ceilidh to set your toes tapping! You can hear the caller shouting out occasional helpful instructions. It’s towards the end of the dance so the dancers have got the idea and little help is needed! (Warning! Flashing lights in the video!)
In the lead up to our ceilidh dance at the band stand in Vivary Park, Taunton, Somerset UK on Sunday 18th May 2025 from 3pm to 5pm, we will be posting lots of other ceilidh barn dance moves for your enjoyment. So check back here regularly and we look forward to seeing you!
By the way, if you are thinking of celebrating a special private birthday party, anniversary or wedding with a barn dance or ceilidh or even holding an open to the public ceilidh dance at your village hall, Judy, our intrepid band leader and organiser would love to hear from you to help you with your planning.
